WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

Imminently expected are the published findings of the World Health Organisation research. If advance notices in the press are confirmed this will show a definitive link between air travel and DVT. The Report is also expected to provide evidence that a flight of more than 4 hours increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis in the general population by between three and five times! VARDA needs to be poised to respond. There are also positive grounds for believing that the results of this long awaited research will  trigger responses from within the European Parliament where VARDA has already done much useful groundwork. On the research issue John Smith MP is very optimistic predicting that 2005 “will become known as the year the link between flying and DVT was scientifically proven.”

  • UK Government contribution to date (11/03) Circa £400,000 Total projected contribution £1.1Million

  • Epidemiological studies being carried out at Leiden University Medical Centre & Amsterdam Medical Centre

  • Clinical & Physiopathological studies being carried out in UK

  • First results due for publication 2005. (Press reports claim link with flying will be established)

  • Clinical research stalled due to £10M shortfall in funding.
